Marisa is sharing her grandma's garden in New Berlin, Wisconsin, which has been a significant part of her life since childhood. According to Marisa, this garden was the first one she ever knew, and it has become a special place for her and her family to explore and enjoy.

Garden Overview

The garden is a large space with various features, including peach and plum trees that have grown into a canopy over the paths, fountain, flower beds, and collected treasures. Marisa mentions that as a kid, this space felt enormous and endlessly explorable, and she still finds herself wandering through to see what new treasures her grandma has added and what's blooming.

Marisa's grandma has grown a variety of fruits over the years, including peaches, plums, pears, apples, and cherries. Marisa recalls picking fruit straight from these trees and eating it right where it grew, which was a normal experience for her long before she understood how special it was.

Garden Features

The garden has several unique features, such as a fountain that was used as a kitchen sink for playing "house" and an old hand pump that became whatever the kids needed it to be. Marisa's grandma has also tucked little surprises throughout the garden, including birdhouses, ladybugs, frogs, wind chimes, and figurines.

The garden is filled with flowers, including pink rain lilies, purple bellflowers, and pink verbena, which are tucked into every available space, including containers. Geraniums are also abundant in the garden and will always remind Marisa of her grandma.

Sharing and Preserving

Marisa's grandma grows enough food to share with her entire neighborhood, and before Marisa had her own garden, her grandma was her summertime grocery store. Now they trade vegetables back and forth, and Marisa rarely bothers growing cucumbers herself because she knows her grandma will have plenty to share. Marisa's grandma is also a master canner, and Marisa hopes to learn everything she knows about preserving food.
