A Gardening Know How article lists seven low-maintenance evergreen plants that provide year-round structure and color...

Want a garden that looks good all year round? Plant one (or more!) of these low maintenance evergreens, stat. Gardening Know How writer Kayleigh Dray explains that while everything else comes and goes with the seasons, evergreens quietly get on with the job, keeping borders looking full, adding structure when perennials disappear for winter, and making the whole garden feel alive even on the grayest January morning. She notes that the very best ones are wonderfully low maintenance, providing you plant them in the right spot and give them a good start. The only thing she recommends before adding any new plant is checking its preferred USDA planting zones, as even the toughest plants perform best in a suitable climate.

Evergreens That Thrive On Neglect

1. Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra)

Inkberry holly is a native evergreen shrub suited to wildlife-friendly gardens in the eastern U.S. Unlike some hollies, it has no painfully prickly leaves. Once established, it needs remarkably little attention beyond the occasional light trim. The Forever Emerald™ Inkberry is on sale at Nature Hills.

2. Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)

Star jasmine is a climber that covers itself in wonderfully fragrant white flowers in spring and early summer. Even after the blooms fade, the glossy evergreen foliage keeps fences, pergolas and walls looking lush. It seems perfectly content once it has something to scramble over, asking for little more than the occasional tidy-up.

3. Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides)

While gardenias have a reputation for being fussy, choosing a climate-suited variety and giving it the right start yields a hard-working evergreen shrub. Even when not producing famously fragrant white blooms, the glossy dark leaves add year-round elegance. The Steady as She Goes® Gardenia from Nature Hills promises heat tolerance, drought tolerance, and deer resistance.

4. Coral Bells (Heuchera)

Not every evergreen has to be a shrub. Coral bells are evergreen perennials known for colorful foliage in shades from caramel and lime to deep purple. They fill gaps and brighten shady corners with very little required in return.

5. Juniper (Juniperus spp.)

Juniper tolerates drought, poor soil, heat, wind, and gardener forgetfulness. It comes in groundcover or upright shrub forms, providing dependable texture and color.

6. American Holly (Ilex opaca)

American holly offers dense year-round screening and bright red berries in winter, which attract birds. Generally, both a male and a female plant are needed for a reliable berry display.

7. Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana)

Eastern red cedar is a tough native tree that shrugs off drought and poor soils once established. Its blue-green foliage and berry-like cones make it a powerhouse for wildlife, offering food and shelter for birds.

The writer concludes that with so many reliable and forgiving options available, gardeners may end up with more than just one of these resilient plants.
